A significant moment came in 2013 when Umesh Katti successfully won the Karnataka Legislative Assembly elections from the Hukkeri Assembly area. He won by a large margin of 81,810 votes, securing his position as a legislator for eight terms, representing the Belagavi district in northern Karnataka.

Umesh Katti was notably against Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa’s plan to release water from the Krishna River to Maharashtra using the Tubchi-Babalad lift irrigation scheme. He also firmly stood for fair development in the region. He even suggested that if the northern part of Karnataka was neglected, it should have its separate statehood.

During the tough times of the COVID-19 pandemic, Katti, who was a minister, made a comment that caused controversy. He said, “Ministers should survive COVID-19, but I’m not sure about the public.” This statement got a lot of attention and led to debates.

In 2021, when a farmer raised concerns about getting less rice through the public distribution system, Katti’s response caused a surprise. He said, “It might be better to die. That’s why we’ve stopped giving. Please don’t bother me.”

Unfortunately, on 06 September 2022, Umesh Katti had a serious heart attack and collapsed at his home in Bangalore’s Dollar’s Colony. He was taken to M S Ramaiah Hospital, but sadly, he couldn’t recover. His last rites were performed respectfully in his hometown, Bellad Bagewadi.
